Here’s a Pitchfork
Mother’s Day is tomorrow.
I care not about Mother’s Day “bells and whistles.” I just want to be with my fabulous family.
Last week Richard and our two eldest sons spent the night at our church for “Just Me and My Dad” night. There they fired marshmallow guns, jumped in bouncy houses, ran obstacle courses and slid down giant inflatable slides; they tie-dyed “Just Me and My Dad” shirts, ate too much sugar and watched “Meet the Robinsons” before finally getting some sleep.
I discovered the next morning upon opening the door for my “men” that the previous night’s covert agenda was to make gifts for Moms: ribbon and button-adorned terra cotta pots filled with dry pinto beans, into which were stuck pens attached to brightly colored, artificial daisies with floral tape.
I’ve always wanted one of those! Now I have three (thanks to one of my teen daughters’ helping with the project). : )
Hear me when I say that I cherish ALL of the flower pots so lovingly assembled by my kids. One in particular still makes me laugh out loud, one week later…and thankfully my 9-year-old son is laughing with me. I guess that to him, the cardholder pick (you know, the trident thingy) looked like a pitchfork, so he wrote this on his card:

“Here’s a pitchfork. I hope you like it.”
He is a stellar student with a lion-sized heart who manages to find humor in everything; so when he saw the pick, he quick-wittedly (he doesn’t get his quick wit from me) wrote on the card, “Here’s a pitchfork. I hope you like it,” as if the flowers are there to present the “pitchfork” rather than the card presenting the gift.
He gave me laughter AND flowers…..and a pitchfork.
So, I guess I did get my Mother’s Day bells and whistles after all….the kind I like. I am so blessed.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!
